LGBTQ+?

Good sexual health is about looking after yourself and others and this includes people who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBTQ+). NHS Ayrshire and Arran believe that LGBTQ+ people, like everyone else, should feel comfortable, safe and have access to free confidential inclusive services.

NHS Ayrshire and Arran Sexual health department has also achieved their silver LGBTQ+ Charter award.

What does it mean to be LGBT?

The term lesbian is used to describe women who are sexually and romantically attracted to other women and the word gay is often used to describe people who are sexually or romantically attracted to people of the same sex or gender. A gay identity can apply to either men or women.

Bisexual is used to describe people who are sexually and romantically attracted to people of either sex or gender.

What does it mean to be transgender?

Transgender is an umbrella term people use to describe different gender identities or gender expression that may differ from the sex someone was assigned at birth. This can include transsexual, cross-dresser, gender fluid or non- binary. NHS Ayrshire and Arran recognise that the sexual health needs of transgender people are equally important as everyone else and may also include transgender people who also identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or heterosexual.

There are a number of Sexual Health services in Ayrshire that everyone regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity can access. Alternatively there is a specialist Gender Identity Clinic at the Sandyford Initiative in Glasgow with a consultant gender specialist, a nurse and a counsellor.

Have a look at the useful links section on LGBTQ+ for a direct link to the Gender Identity Clinic and other LGBTQ+ support services and initiatives.
