Pregnancy Testing in Pharmacies

Some pharmacies in Ayrshire & Arran offer free pregnancy tests for young people on request. Click here for the list of pharmacies.

How does the service work?

You can pick up a FREE pregnancy test from one of our enhanced sexual health pharmacies. You can take this away with you to carry out the test somewhere where you feel comfortable to do so.

Who is the service for?

The service is available if you are aged between 13 and 18 years of age and think you may be pregnant. You do not have to prove your age, but the test should be collected by you. Partners or friends should not collect a test for you.

What do I do when I get there?

Simply show the SHAYR Pregnancy Test Ticket on your phone to the pharmacy staff who will provide you with one free pregnancy test. Or, if you feel comfortable enough, you can simply ask at the counter or ask to speak to the Pharmacist.

The test will be given to you in discrete packaging, and you can take this away with you to complete somewhere you feel comfortable.

A member of the pharmacy team will talk you through the instructions on how to do the test if you need more information.

IMPORTANT

The pregnancy tests used are most effective at detecting a pregnancy from 7 to 10 days after unprotected sex. If you test too early, the result may not be accurate, and you may need to test again at a later date. If it has been less than 7 days since you had unprotected sex, please still attend the Pharmacy where you can discuss other options and get advice.

If you have had sex without a condom (unprotected sex) or if you experience condom failure (falls off or splits) there is a risk that you could have an STI. If this is left untreated there is a risk that you could pass this on to someone else. Practise safer sex by always using a condom for vaginal, anal or oral sex.

You can get condoms FREE OF CHARGE through our CCard scheme, or postal condom service. For more information click here.
